The surname Stretch is English in origin, most common in the Counties of Lancashire and Cheshire, so it is reasonable to assume that originates from the North East of England.

There is a Domesday book entry under the name Strahlei in Nottingham, which is thought by some to be a predecesor of the name Stretch

A William Stretch is recorded in listed Wills in Cheshire in England in 1596.

The etymology/origin of the name is XXXXX XXXXX for certain, but it is thought to derive from the Middle English 'strech' or 'strechhe' mraning strong or violent. The largest concentrations of this name in the US are to be found in Illinois and Pennsylvania, one of the first arrivals being Peter Stretch who arrived in Philadelphia in 1702 - 1703.
