I would like to know if Nichols is an Irish surname and if so, what clan would it have ties to?
Nichols, and it's many variant spellings is derived from the Ancient Greek Nikolaos. It was used mainly as a given name until medieval times, when it began to be adopted as a family name. There is a record of a Nichols in the Domesday book.

There is another, probably equally valid theory that the Nicholls in Ireland descended from Scots of the name McNicaell, who in turn had Norse/Danish ancestry. The family name Nichol is regarded as a clan in its own right.
