You may want to invest in a pair of virtual glasses. Essentially, it is like having a large screen TV in front of you. This would allow him to watch TV without having to hold anything in front of him.

great idea but a) not available yet and b) not acceptable in a high tech hospital environment where mobile phones not accepted but thanks for trying.

There are many types currently available. Many of these will connect directly to an iPod, and do not use any technology that would interfere with technology in a hospital (cell phone etc).
