Are the black mats at the gym toxic

Resolved Question:

I recently became a member at a new fitness club in my area and there is a gaseous odor which I believe is from the black mats they use as flooring. I suspect these mats are made from recycled tires. I have found that the odor stays with me even after I leave the gym and I can still smell it in my gym towels after I wash them. Is it possible that it is toxic?

Welcome back!

Rubber does tend to have a pungent odor. However, mats made from recycled tires are non-toxic (references: http://www.rubbermulch.com/playground_surface.htm, http://www.detailedplaypro.com/playground-surfacing.htm, http://www.asandc.com/playsafe/).

It is possible, if you feel effects from the rubber, that you are allergic to it.
