When writing a lesson or unit plan, a teacher should state the purpose and the aims of the plan.

The purpose(s) is / are why the unit is being taught.

The aims are specific outcomes which the teacher should be able to measure by testing the students.

Example 1 - Money Math. (grade 2)

Purpose - This unit will teach students the mathematic skills they need to manage money in everyday life.

Aims - By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

• Calculate the total amount of money given in banknotes and coins.
• Write money amounts using the dollar symbol and decimal point correctly. eg $5.21
• Calculate the total cost of up to three items of price up to $5 each.
• Calculate the change given when purchasing a single item (value up to $5)

Example 2 - The seasons ( K).

Purpose - This unit will teach students about the four seasons.

Aims - By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

• Name the four seasons.
• Describe each season using temperature, likely weather etc.
• Describe how trees change in each season (leaves, blossoms, fruit )
• Name the months that each season occurs in.
