Hi, If it is so bad that you can't remove it with tarnish remover, I don't believe there is another way besides taking it to a jeweler and having it melted down and recast.

what type of tarnish remover? Will it work on gem stone rings?

Hi, you use the tarnish remover on the gold and around the gem, then clean the stone with a brush and jewelry cleaner. You can use regular silver tarnish remover available at the grocery store. As I said before, I don't know how bad they are, but tarnish remover works to remove a lot of stuff without scratching. Try it on one and see what you think.
