What causes little holes in your shirts

Customer Question

So many of my shirts get little holes in them. It is usually after I wash them. I have the Maytag washer that doesn't have an agitator, so I don't understand what is causing them.
Can you help?
Thanks.

If you have pets, they can get their claws stuck in your shirt when you pick them up. Usually holes are caused by something grabbing onto your clothing. If threads fall out, this could also be the cause. Otherwise I am not sure what could be doing it.

If anyone else has a better suggestion, please add.

Well to get a better idea of what is causing the holes, are these new shirts? How long are your shirts lasting?
Customer: replied 11 years ago.
Reply to Christopher Valk's Post: Yes, these are new shirts now that you mentioned it. My shirts on the average are lasting a long time. They eventually pill up too bad to wear.

If you use bleach too frequently, this is likely the cause. Are you using bleach? What kind of detergent are you using.
What kind of shirts are these? What fabric?

Sounds to me like a bad batch of shirts.
Customer: replied 11 years ago.
Reply to Christopher Valk's Post: I never use bleach. The shirts are cotton. And they are not all from the same bath. They have been gotten at different times, diferent stores, different sizes.

We are getting down to the bottom of the barrel on suggestions, but I have a couple more.

I would search the washing machine and drier for anything that may be able to catch onto these shirts while they are washing or drying. If nothing is found, you could always run some landry at the laundromat and see what happens there.

If all else fails, you may need your machine professionally serviced.

Cool! A mystery!

How about this: the source is not the washing machine, it is

happening in storage. You may have "moths".

There are also Carpet Beetles that can often be found in carpeting that eat clothing their larvae looks like little brown worms with hair at the end of them, you see them more often than the beetles themselves. If your clothes are left on the floor at any time and you have carpeting this can be the cause of the holes. During the Larvae stage is when they eat material and do the most damage. Here is some info on protecting your home from them.
