Question

How to find my great grandmother.

Sent to General Experts September 10, 2007 10:41 p.m.

I know she was listed on the 1900 and 1910 Oklahoma census. She has older children that she may have gone to live with, but I cannot find them.
Any suggestions?

Dear Sherry,

Thank you for asking your question here at Just Answer. It is always exciting to find people who are interested in learning more about their family history. As a matter of fact, I have some Womacks in my own family tree. We might have to compare notes some time.

In order to clarify your question:

-Are you looking for your great-grandmother specifically in the 1920 and 1930 censuses?

And to answer your question it might be helpful to have a little more information so I can send you in the right direction for your search:

-What is your great-grandmother's name, age and birthplace?

-What city was she living in during the 1900 and 1910 censuses?

I look forward to your reply!

I am looking for any sign of her after 1910.
Her name was Elmira Hibdon Jones. Her parents came from Texas and are listed on the Oklahoma Indian Teritory census of 1900. They also come up on the Access Genealogy site because they are of Mississippi Choctaw descent. Elmira's parents are John and Lucinda Hibdon and are buried in OK in what is now Ryan,OK. They both passed in Feb. 1902. They come up on the OK interment site.
Then, in 1910, Elmira and her husband James S. Jones are listed as living in Stephens County, (Hope Township) along with two older sons, Custer 1888 and Crocket-1885, and two younger sons Ira Thomas -1904 and Oran Wriel-1900. The census was taken in April, then in Aug. of 1910, James passed away. He is buried at the Velma, OK cemetery.
I know that in 1911, most of the family was in Stephens County, OK, because my grandparents had a baby that was born in 1908 and she passed away at the age of three from diptheria and is buried very close to grandpa at the Alma cememtery.
Then, I know that the family moved to Konawa/ Asher OK (I believe to work on the railroad) because my grandparents had a baby named Elbert Lafayette Jones and I have his birth certificate showing he was born in Asher, OK (Pottawatamie County). I also know that son Custer bought four cememtery plots in the town of Konawa in Feb. 1913, but there is nothing there. No markers-nothing.
Then, the family goes in different directions. Custer and Crocket are listed in the 1920 census living not far from Konawa in Enid, OK (I believe working in the oil fields) I cannot find the younger tow boys-but then in 1930, Ira Thomas Jones is back in Stephens County, OK. Custer is shot and killed by carjackers in 1932 and then Ira Thomas goes to Texas after his ex-wife and her new husband kills him. I believe that was in Eldorado, TX.
Elmira also has other kids, Levi L. (he is buried in Martha OK) and Lenora Geneva, then my ggrandfather and his twin David Crocket, Arthur Custer, Vienna, Oran, then one named -I think-Stacy- then Ira Thomas.
So, she may have gone with one of her kids after her husband passed-but I just cannot find them. I cannot find any of the girls. I did find my grandparents listed on the Chickasaw Grooms list book in 1908. My Granny's name was Inic Eulysie Akers. Her father was Layfayette Akers.
My only living uncle believes there may be a possibility that she is buried at Konawa, but I don't. There is no death certificate for her in OK, (I have tried several times) and all of the other graves have markers. I have also tried TX, but you need a specific date before they will do a search.
I have looked for about ten years for her-I feel a connection to her for some reason-and just really want to find her!
Thanks,
Sherry
