Hello there,

I hope your treatment is going well, I have put a special effort into your question as I want to cheer you up. I have not consulted any family trees, I have worked on primary records. Henry was born in Surrey England 1850, 1861 English census Henry is living in the workhouse in Surrey, he emigrated to Australia as a seaman aged 16.

Something must have happened to his parents for him to be 10 years old and living in the workhouse.

cheers gaye

Expert:  Brendan Joseph replied 1 year ago.

Hello Gaye,

I found the above records in:

www.ancestry.com

www.familysearch.org

The collections are listed on the top of each record.

Expert:  Shirley replied 1 year ago.

Hello Gaye,

There are basically two types of sources/records we use in genealogy; primary and secondary.

Primary records are usually original records such as a birth certificate (as long as the birth certificate was recorded at the time of birth), it is "eye-witness" testimony.

Secondary evidence is a little harder to describe. It can be a transcription of an original record or using the death certificate to prove the birth date. It is a record that was not made/recorded at the time of the event. Published genealogies and family histories as well as county histories fall into the secondary source category.

However, "classifying evidence as either primary or secondary does not tell us anything about its accuracy or its ultimate value. It is always good to ask the following questions of secondary evidence:

1. How far removed from the original is it (when it is a copy)?

2. What was the reason for the creation of the source which contains this evidence?

3. Who was responsible for creating this secondary evidence and what interest did he have in its accuracy?"

Quoted from The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy, 2nd Edition, by Val D. Greenwood, page 63. If you are serious about having an accurate credible genealogy you might want to read this book.

I hope that answers your question.

Shirley
