My grandfather was killed in an accident in 1937 in Riverdale, NJ. I contacted their local library and was told they do not have records that far back....I would like to see an obituary but do not know where to look. He lived in Hillside, NJ and assume he had a funeral there. My grandmother passed away in 1972 and she rarely spoke of him and my father was just ll yrs old when his dad was killed....his name was Joseph Carragino....where do I look to find his obituary? Or a death record.
Already Tried: I contacted the library in the town he was killed.
Hello,Welcome and thanks for your question. If the local library did not have a copy of the obituary, the state library may have microfilm copies in its files. Obituary records aren't online so you would need to contact them in person.
However, the best way is to order his death certificate from the New Jersey Department of Health Vital Statistics division, which usually tells you the name of the funeral home handling the arrangements. http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/gen.shtml Often the funeral home will have a copy of the obituary in its files.
Let me know if you have questions.
All the best,
Schuyler
Until I try this, I am not going to OK this. My cousin is also trying to find the death certificate of our grandfather. She told me she tried this and had a problem proving that she was his granddaughter....I do have my father's birth certificate showing his father's name and my birth certifl shows my father's name.....until I send this info to vital statistics in NJ, and get an answer, I am not approving this...I paid for an answer, I just need to see if vital statistics has the info I need....If they cannot produce it and the funeral home, I am not going to give an OK on this.
Well, naturally I'm disappointed that you won't pay for my work until some agency that I have no control over determines if they have their act together or not. The question was "where do I look to find his obituary? Or a death record." Both were answered. You now know where to look. We have no control over what the library maintains in its collection or the efficiency of the New Jersey Department of Vital Statistics.
