My great great grandfather XXXXX XXXXX was born in Brazil in 1805. I picked him up coming into Baltimore from Rio DeJanerio on 3 Aug 1837. He said he fought in the Seminole wars under Gen Harney. The next record I could find is his marriage 12 Feb 1846 in Toronto. He said in a census that his parent were born in Hamberg Germany. Can't find nothing more can you help.
Already Tried: just what I could find at the library.
Hello,Welcome to Just Answer and thanks for your question. What specific information are you looking for? Do you know in what part of Brazil he was born?
Don't know where he was born. Only know he was from Brazil maybe jewish background . My grandmother said that original name was Mueller (not sure of the spelling). Just know that when he landed in Baltimore aboard the brig Admiral he list his trade as sailor. He had a enough childern that I could trace him in his later years. What I was hoping to find was his parents name and how he got to Canada after fighting in Florida. Did he get discharged or take off to Canada.
Thank you. Miller is the English translation of Mueller (Müller). It's an occupational name and doesn't connote Jewishness or not. There were far more non-Jewish Millers than Jewish ones. William would have been Wilhelm in German. Brazilian birth records are not online prior to civil registration of births which began in 1889. For birth records prior to that, research has to be done in person in the churches and synagogues.
Military records are also not online.
Do you know where he and Elizabeth were married? Is he the one who died in Alpena, Michigan in 1889?
