Customer Question

If I am renting a home and have found out the person I'm renting from and on the lease is not the owner, what do I do?

Do you know if they have permission to act for the owner of record?

How did you learn of the discrepancy?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I do not know if they have permission or not.
I looked the address up on the property appraisers records.

Thank you for the additional information.

The online record may not be current. Ask the landlord to present proof of ownership. A deed or title policy will suffice and is easy enough to produce. You can refuse to pay rent until the issue is resolved.

Otherwise, you can also contact the owner whose name shows up online and see if they know your landlord.
