You will have to contact the American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit (of the U.S. Department of State) serving your state.

Go to this link and http://canberra.usembassy.gov/acscontact.html select the state or territory which you reside in and ask them for assistance in confirming the passport number you have.

There is not an external database accessible to the public to independently verify the number.
