Customer Question

A person who stated they were from an electricity company called me on the telephone and had my name, address and date of birth details. They discussed upgrading my electricity plan and I provided my VictorXXXXX XXXXXcence number. I have since contacted the electricity company and they believe it is a scam. Do I need to be concerned that whoever called me has my name, address, date of birth and VictorXXXXX XXXXXcence number? Please help, thank you, XXXXX XXXXX

Already Tried:
I rang the electricity company. They advised me to call the police which I did. The police advised me to call VicRoads, which I did but they will not change my licence number unless it is deemed by the police to be a serious nature. Vic Roads advised me to call consumer affairs to log it as a scam - which I did. Consumer affairs advised me to call Australian Federal Police in case of identify fraud - which I did. AFP advised me to contact you.

Hello and thank you for entrusting me to assist you. My goal is to answer your question completely and thoroughly and to provide excellent service.

I am very sorry to hear that you have been caught up in what seems to be a scam. Fortunately, it sounds as though you have stayed on top on the matter and taken the necessary precautions by contacting the relevant authorities.

You will be pleased to know that the information you have given will not typically be sufficient to perpetrate any sort of identity fraud against you. Indeed, without your Tax File Number and/or bank account number, nothing can usually be done at all.

The above noted, it cannot hurt to be vigilant in checking your bank account and credit cards for suspicious activity. Many banks now offer notifications via email or text message any time an online transaction is posted to your account. You may wish to inquire with your bank and credit card company to see if they offer such service as a means for you to keep a watchful eye on your money.

In addition to making the law enforcement reports that you already have, you can also make a report to Scam Watch here: https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/tag/reportascam

If I can provide any more information whatsoever, please do not hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to continue assisting you.

If you do not have any further concerns, I would be very grateful if you would give my answer a positive rating and click submit, as this is the only way I will receive credit for assisting you.

Finally, please bear in mind that none of the above constitutes legal advice nor is any attorney client relationship created between us.

Thank you and very kindest regards.
