Customer Question

Received letter from Euromilliones Loteria Commision saying I drew numbers which won the lottery in the 3rd catagory amounting to 815,960Euros. Scam my mind immediately told ... I have no idea when or where I entered this lottery. Curiosity got the better of me so I decided to call the "agent's" number to find out how much money the wanted from to receive this magnificient windfall. Agent took my name and the info listed regarding my reference number and batch nmber. He said he would call me. A day or so later he did - verified I wwas the person he had spoken to before, said my claim was okayand he 'd call again. Today he - told some story of the 900 some odd dollars Imustsubmit to pay for inurance and so forth to receive the "winnings". I asked that he send me something in writing with the instruction s. I am to receive an e-mail listing the procedure I am to follow. Is there any way we can hang these people???? I haven't received the email as yet Should I send the money - by money order - Iwant to keep my bank out of tnis - and when Idon't hear from them again can we screw them some way? Or just count myself lucky that I don't have any money problem I am having trouble handling and forget it? HATE to think someone has been hurt !!!

Ben Jones :

Hello and thank you for your question, which I will be happy to assist you with.

You are correct that this is 100% a scam. I would strongly recommend that you do not send any money as that will be lost. In terms of catching these people then that is unlikely. The reason for this is that there are so many scammers like that around and the authorities would rarely go out of their way to pursue them one by one and bring them to justice. They are difficult to trace - they often use internet cafes and cannot be located very easily, or at all and it is generally accepted that the best way to avoid such scams is not to trace and lock up the scammers, but to educate the general public on how to spot them early and avoid them.

Nevertheless there are places where you can report this but as mentioned don't expect to hear that these people have been caught and forced to answer someone for their actions.

If you wish to report this, the following options are available to you:

  • You can report any scam to the Federal Trade Commission by emailing: spam@uce.gov
  • If you have been told you are due to receive money you can contact your local Secret Service field office by emailing 419.fcd@usss.treas.gov
  • If you have already sent money, contact your local State Attorney General

Ben Jones :

Please let me know if you need any further help with your query. If you feel the need to leave a lower rating, please reply to me first with any further questions you have. I will be happy to assist further and clarify anything you need me to. Thank you
