I got a letter in the mail, that i thought was from the secret

Customer Question

I got a letter in the mail, that i thought was from the secret shopper sites i applied at. The check was in there, and everything seemed legit. But come to find out it was all a fraud, and i cashed the check and sent it to them. I don't know what to do, and I am getting a little scared.

Ben Jones :

Hello and thank you for your question, which I will be happy to assist you with. Please let me know what exactly are you scared of in relation to this?

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

going to jail for cashing a fake check. and if your company is going to keep charging me for talking with you

Ben Jones :

Hah, we only have a one off charge, for which you have already paid a deposit, so don't worry about that. Have you sent the money they requested you to and if so - how?

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

yes i did, and it was a money order through western union and it was there in like 5 to 10 mins

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

i just want answers..

Ben Jones :

you should not get too concerned about cashing a fake check, especially as this was done unintentionally and with no malicious intent in mind. You have basically been the victim of a scam and the authorities would not be prosecuting you in the circumstances. The bad news is that the money you have sent is likely to be lost. Sending money through WU offers you no protection at all and if you sent the money and authorised the recipient to withdraw it, it is basically lost.

If you wish to report this, the following options are available to you:

  • You can report any scam to the Federal Trade Commission by emailing: spam@uce.gov
  • If you have already sent money, contact your local State Attorney General

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

i already filled out a scam report..

Ben Jones :

ok at this stage it is all you can do

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

but what about my bank? i did this all on friday..

Ben Jones :

what about them?

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

since i cashed the check through them, shouldnt they have called me by now?

Ben Jones :

they are unlikely to know it is fake yet - it takes more than a few days

JACUSTOMER-mn0hnj1d- :

then they will contact me? and if so, after that, what do i do about the money?

Ben Jones :

they should contact you that they have been unable to cash the check. After that...well as mentioned the money is as good as lost

Ben Jones :

How can I help further?

Customer :

you just told me everything i already thought i knew.. nothing further.. just how to cancel this

Ben Jones :

Well i can't make up other stuff - not sure what else you were expecting me to tell you

Ben Jones :

At least it confirms your knowledge
