No, wouldn't engine code catch that!

usually it would, however there is clearly an issue that's not throwing a code, and it's consistent with a bad MAF. You could try removing it and cleaning it with mass air meter cleaner and see if anything changes. Sometimes that will help. We see failed components often that don't throw a trouble code.

I would suggest cleaning it first, and see if it resolves or improves the symptoms.

If cleaning it does not resolve the problem and you would like instructions on testing it, please let me know. This can be done with a digital multi meter.
