Customer Question

I have a 1997crown Vic. I out the key in and the ignition turns won't start and aux lights stay on even after I remove the key. I have replaced ignition switch and now it won't start or turn off
JA: Is the car in "Park" or "Neutral?" Do you know if your car has a "wheel lock" feature?
Customer: Yes it does I tried park and neutral no difference
JA: What is the make/model/year of your car?
Customer: 1997 crown Vic 4.8 liter
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes I replaced the ignition switch
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Just that the only way to turn it off is to remove a relay fuse

What is your diagnosis?

Thank for the VIN!

Lets diagnose the no crank condition first. From there, we will get our diagnoses.

Sound good?

Oj
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ok
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 1 month ago.

Lets check for power coming directly out of the ignition switch with the key in the CRANK position on the white wire with pink stripe.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Yeah there is power coming out. The aux lights stayed on before I changed ignition Now lights stay off. I could only start it while touching the starter with a driver. It won't shut off till I took a relay fuse out
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I recently 3 months ago replaced the alternator too
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 1 month ago.

So there is power power on the white/pink wire coming out of the ignition switch with the key in the CRANK position only?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Yeah
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 1 month ago.

Is the small wire going to the starter getting battery voltage with the key in the CRANK position?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Yeah. I asked another guy and he said there might have been pin that fell out of place in the steering column
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 1 month ago.

This is very possible. But if this were the case causing this no crank condition, then you would not have power coming out of the switch on the white/pink wire.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I have to step away for a while. Is there any way I can contact you in the morning?
