Customer Question

Hello,
JA: Hi. What do you want help with?
Customer: I have a 05 ford freestyle that is shutting down goes in to limp mode and charging system check comes on. Says check engine and check trans. I have readplace the alternator with new one twice and is still doing it.
JA: Do you have the trouble code? Do you have a code reader or scan tool?
Customer: I have a small hand held code reader.
JA: I'll pass this info along to the Ford Mechanic so that he can get you a quick fix. Are you fixing your Freestyle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes. I have replaced the alternator twice . It will work for about 3-5 days and then do it again.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Not that I know of.

When you scan the computer system what are the fault code and or codes your getting?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I don't have the car in front of me right know . I believe it was 853 or 863.
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

Can you recke them when you can and post back with them and we can work from there. All fault codes should be 4 digits.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Hi Ron, the code coming up on my OBD2 hand held is 563. High voltage.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
P0563
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

This code sets if the charging system is over charging, what is the charging voltage at the battery with the engine running reading?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
14.5
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

And you sure the code is P0563?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
It went into limp mode again. So right now i've unhooked battery to do a reset.
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

Once you get it reconnected and running again can you recheck the fault codes and see if this is the code your getting?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
just cleared that code. Also brings up he k engin, transmission, the little wrench, and check k track control.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I'll check.
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

Okay let me know.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Shows same code. I let it sit about 5 minutes before reattaching it. Still comes up.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Last time I unhooked battery for about 20 minutes. It reset the limp mode and ran for 3 days. I have replaced the alternator twice with new, no used.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Not sure what else it could be. Maybe ECM?
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

The charging system is controlled by the duty cycle from the PCM and its not likely a alternator issue you have going on here but maybe a PCM issue. Let see what the fault code and or codes are that reset.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
What's the PCM? I drawing a blank.
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

The PCM (power train control module) is the computer that controls the engine management system. See it in the link below.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Yeah it hit me just after messaging you. Is that hard to replace?
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

Its not hard to replace but will need programming but I would not replace anymore part just yet. Lets see what the fault code and or codes are that reset the next time it goes into Limp mode first.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Each time it's been the same codes. I have done this 4 times now.
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

Are these new OEM Ford alternators your installing?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I reattached the battery, same code still in limp mode. Shifts hard into gear and yes the alternator is brand new had it tested before I put it on, both times.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I got it out of limp mode for now.
Expert:  Ron replied 4 months ago.

Im suspecting you may have a bad PCM if your sure the new alternators are okay but I can not be sure from here. I can open the post back up for you if you would like another opinion.
