Customer Question

we have a 2006 Ford f150 Lariat crew cab. It's down in the Bahamas and we disconnected the battery before we left. When we just reconnected the battery the truck started right up but would not go into gear, any gear. Then the ling on the dash sit up and said transmission malfunction gone into safe mode. we disconnected it and tried again and no change.
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you checked the brake switch?
Customer: The original as far as we know. It was bought in Seattle last September. My friend is down there now, I'm in Alaska
JA: Are you fixing your F150 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: just what I typed in the problem explanation
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Can you move the shifter or is it staying in park?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
That I don't know. I'm in contact with my friend by email. But, from what he's saying I'm assuming it remains in park.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
let's assume that for now.

Hmm, I just got an email from him and he got it going. It seems it was low on transmission fluid. Always check the simple things first.

not sure how it leaked out.

a bit embarrassing to say the least.
Expert:  Ray M. replied 2 months ago.

From experience, it most likely leaked out from the pan gasket which has shrunk from sitting long periods. if there is no sign of fluid under the truck, check the radiator as the trans cooler make have started to leak in the radiator.

Thanks, that's likely what happened. The heat in the Bahamas can be hard on gaskets.
