Our 1998 Windstar is turning over, but will not start. Yes.

Customer Question

Our 1998 Windstar is turning over, but will not start.
JA: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded?
Customer: Yes. The battery, starter and alternator have all been checked at our local autozone and they are all working properly they said.
JA: Are you fixing your Windstar yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: No, we really just want to try to figure out the most likely cause and try to figure out the normal cost for the repair in our area. We are not mechanically savvy and fear being "taken" by an untrustworthy mechanic.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I don't think so. That is about all that is occurring.

Do you hear the fuel pump come on for 2 seconds when the key is first turned on?

.

Do you know what the fuel pressure is?

.

Have you checked for spark at the plugs?

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Let me check on the sound for the fuel pump. We have not check the spark plugs at all. I understand somewhat how fuel pressure works
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
There is a clicking when the key is inserted and turned, but the engine isn't turned over.
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Would fouled plugs make it not start?
Expert:  Super Mechanic replied 8 months ago.

So, the engine is NOT turning over when the key is turned?

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
No the engine turns over but will not start
Expert:  Super Mechanic replied 8 months ago.

I see, thanks. That could be any number of things. The only way to know is to check.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.

Expert:  Super Mechanic replied 8 months ago.

It could be but is it putting out any pressure?

Expert:  Super Mechanic replied 8 months ago.

Also, will it start for a second with a shot of ether sprayed into the intake?

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
I don't know how to check fuel pressure, how would one do that?
Expert:  Super Mechanic replied 8 months ago.

You can normally borrow the gauge from a parts store, (such as autozone or advance) and it hooks to the fuel rail, at the test port.
