Won't start, died on the road seems like lack of fuel, but

Customer Question

Won't start, died on the road seems like lack of fuel, but fuel bowl is full
JA: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded?
Customer: it cranks
JA: What is the model/year of your Ford?
Customer: I'm trying to figure out why it has a fuel pump relay. Its a 1997 7.3 diesel with a mechanical pump in the valley
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I have done very little. The truck died on me, then I started it and drove a little and it died again
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: It was firing when I cranked it, but now it doesn't fire at all

What does the Fuel Pump Relay supply power to, if the truck has no electric fuel pump?
