When I start my truck, it makes a grinding noise for about 7

Customer Question

When I start my truck, it makes a grinding noise for about 7 seconds. First starting it in the AM it will grind, then stop for about 30 seconds then do it again. Then in the afternoon or evening when I go home from work, it does it once, when starting. Sounds like it come from below the air cleaner housing.
JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: Like I said, from below the air cleaner housing. It started about 3 months ago. but it was occasional. Now it does it everyday.
JA: What is the model/year of your Ford?
Customer: 2011 F150 Ecoboost
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes. I took the air filter out, but you have to take the entire housing off to see what is below it.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: No

Will it still make the noise if the AC is turned off before the vehicle is turned off so that the AC will not be turned on when the vehicle is started the next morning?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
The AC may have been on twice when I start it in the AM. The vast majority of the time, it is off.

Is the defroster on in the morning?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Its not left on. I may turn it on depending on the morning. Even in the summer.
Expert:  A. Penland replied 9 months ago.

It is possible the problem may be the AC compressor engaging. It comes on when the AC is turned on and also when the defroster is turned on. Try this and see if the noise is still present. Take the belts off and start the engine in the morning and listen for the noise.

The noise is a lot louder than when I run the AC or defroster. It is horrible.
Customer: replied 9 months ago.
I will try that but probably not until the weekend.
Expert:  A. Penland replied 9 months ago.

Ok. Because the AC compressor has its own belt and is mounted on the passenger side of the engine. It could be internal in the AC compressor or the clutch on the compressor could be breaking apart.

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
The noise is definately the drivres side, under the air filter.

Can you record this noise and post it on this page?
