Hi Im David. well first off welcome to the site. secondly you are now part of thousands and thousand of f150-250's that have the 5.4 triton 3 valve engine that is involved in a class action lawsuit against ford. http://gotaclassaction.com/ford-sued-over-latent-defects-in-vehicles-equipped-with-the-5-4l-engine/

Ok? But what do you recommend I do to solve my problem?
Expert:  david craig replied 7 months ago.

you can replace the timing chains, tensioners, vvt actuators, guides, change the oil and filter. and maybe it will run better. the only 2 vehicles out of the 5 5.4's ive had luck fixing i had to do the following : replaced the head gaskets, rollers, cam phasers, timing chains, guides tensioners vct solenoids. a questionable intake valve and exhaust valve on each head.

the success rate of curing this engine of its illnesses are extremely low. there is no common fix. its a nightmare engine for sure.

What do you recommend I try first?
Expert:  david craig replied 7 months ago.

pull the font cover, pick up the pieces of broken plastic timing chain guides pieces then get a whole timing set. and re time it.

you don't believe it has to do with the phasers?
Expert:  david craig replied 7 months ago.

wish i could give you better news. but there isnt any with this thing. average price with parts and labor in my shop 4000.00 and im cheap.... no. new phasers only wont fix it.

What about the VCT Solenoids? Do you believe that could be the issue?
Expert:  david craig replied 7 months ago.

no.... read some of the complaints and attempts at fixes in the lawsuit.... nothing fixes these things.

Do you think it would be best to install a new engine?
Expert:  david craig replied 7 months ago.

that would be the best bet. in my professional opinion. but get a good warranty
