1987 2.3L rebuilt starter will operate on the test bench, but not in truck or with jumpers.
JA: When you turn the key, do you get a single loud click, or a series of rapid ones?
Customer: rapid.
JA: What is the model of your '87 Ford?
Customer: Ranger
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes. new solenoid & rebuilt starter.

Hi, I am Jesse. Have you tried a different battery in your Ranger? A rapid clicking when ignition is turned to start is typically a weak or discharged battery or a faulty positive battery cable. Don't rely on jumper cables, If battery has a bad cell or is excessively weak it still may not start. I would try a charger and put a slow charge on the battery at high charge amps or install a known good battery.
