Replaced water pump in my 99 f250 diesel. also replaced fan.

Customer Question

replaced water pump in my 99 f250 diesel. also replaced fan. I am losing water somewhere. I noticed that there is some water lose in reservoir. I put new cap on but still leaks at cap. ordered new reservoir. if system cant hold pressure does it cause it to over heat. one weird thing I will stop and park the truck at a job and when i come pacl the cab is filled with terrible order. then when i start up and leave it begins heating up. there is no water under the truck where i had parked it?
JA: What part of the car is the leak coming from? And are you sure it's water?
Customer: Small stream out of edge of reservoir cap.no white smoke from engine runs great. I let cool and have to put in a large ammount of water.
JA: What year is your F250?
Customer: 99
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: opened themistat. waiting for resivore I ordered. if system not under pressure will this happen?
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: no

ok, thanks, ***** ***** replace the thermostat??

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
i did but not help took out no thermistat
Expert:  roy replied 4 months ago.

you need to put it back. it will overheat if you do not have it in.

you can insert a dye in the system that will turn green. if you have any kind of an external leak, no matter how small, will show with this color.

thinking bad one
temp stays normal till get the smell and then jump in few min
Expert:  roy replied 4 months ago.

it is possible.

the smell sounds like you either have a leak under the truck, which is why I suggest the dye, or inside the truck indicating a heater core

The tech which was helping has opted out. Would you like my assistance?

Expert:  Chris (aka- Moose) replied 4 months ago.

I would like to do some more diag. So far the heater core looks like a a for sure possible cause for the odor but not the overheat.
