Have an 05 expedition. I'm Going to be tearing the engine out and putting a reman in. Does anyone have notes or some recommended steps? Thanks.

Hello my name is***** am an ASE master tech, glad to help you with this.

I have done this job before. The easiest way to get the engine out is to lift the body off of the frame. You can get the engine out from the top, but you have to tip the engine upright while it is coming out. You can have the body up in an hour or two. Hopefully this helps you out.

Special Tool(s)

Modular Engine Lift Bracket
303-F047 (014-00073)

All vehicles

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.
  1. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section.
  1. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  1. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) and the support bracket. For additional information, refer to Section 303-14.
  1. If equipped, remove the bolts, nuts and the skid plate.
    1. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06.
    1. Drain the engine oil.
    1. Remove and discard the oil filter.
      1. Disconnect the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor electrical connector.
        1. Remove the hood.
        1. Disconnect the heater hose.
          1. Disconnect the degas bottle coolant hose.
            1. Remove the bolt and the ground cable.
              1. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.

                Early build vehicles

                1. Remove the power steering reservoir and support bracket lower bolt.
                  1. Remove the nut and position the power steering reservoir and support bracket aside.

                    All vehicles

                    1. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump aside.
                      1. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
                        1. Remove the 2 nuts and the wiring harness retainers.
                          1. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
                            1. Remove the bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.

                              Expedition vehicles

                              1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube support bolt.

                                All vehicles

                                1. Remove the nut and the transmission cooler tube support bracket.
                                  1. Remove the nut and the power steering pressure hose support bracket.
                                    1. Remove the bolt and the starter electrical harness support bracket.
                                      1. If equipped, remove the 3 bolts and the LH engine-to-transmission support bracket.
                                        1. If equipped, remove the 3 bolts and the RH engine-to-transmission support bracket.
                                          1. Remove the bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.
                                            1. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
                                              1. Remove the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
                                                • Discard the nuts.
                                                1. If equipped with a 4R70E or 4R75E automatic transmission, remove the 2 bolts, disconnect the shift cable and position the cable and bracket assembly aside.
                                                  1. NOTE: The upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later.

                                                    Remove the lower 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.
                                                    1. Disconnect the RH heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
                                                      1. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold flange nuts.
                                                        1. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nut or damage to the engine mount can occur.

                                                          Remove the RH engine mount nut.
                                                          1. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing the LH engine mount through bolt or damage to the cage nut can occur.

                                                            NOTE: If the LH engine mount through bolt nut is missing or damaged install a new nut using service part number W709375. If the LH engine mount through bolt nut cage is damaged or missing, remove the cage and install a new nut using service part number W520516-S301.

                                                            Remove the LH engine mount through bolt.
                                                            1. Remove the upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts and install the special tool.
                                                              1. Using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.

                                                              1. Using a suitable floor crane, position the engine assembly into the vehicle.
                                                              1. Remove the special tool.
                                                                1. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when installing the LH engine mount through bolt or damage to the cage nut can occur.

                                                                  NOTE: If the LH engine mount through bolt nut is missing or damaged install a new nut using service part number W709375. If the LH engine mount through bolt nut cage is damaged or missing, remove the cage and install a new nut using service part number W520516-S301.

                                                                  Position and install and the LH engine mount through bolt.
                                                                  • Tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
                                                                  1. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when installing the engine mount nut or damage to the engine mount can occur.

                                                                    Install the RH engine mount nut.
                                                                    • Tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
                                                                    1. NOTE: Align the engine-to-transmission dowels before installing the engine-to-transmission bolts.

                                                                      Install the lower 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.
                                                                      • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
                                                                      1. If equipped with a 4R75E automatic transmission, position the shift cable and bracket and install the 2 bolts and connect the shift cable.
                                                                        • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
                                                                        1. Install the 4 exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts.
                                                                          • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
                                                                          1. Connect the RH heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
                                                                            1. Install new torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
                                                                              • Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
                                                                              1. Install the cylinder block opening cover.
                                                                                1. Install the flexplate inspection cover and the 2 bolts.
                                                                                  • Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
                                                                                  1. If equipped, position the RH engine-to-transmission support bracket and install the 3 bolts.
                                                                                    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
                                                                                    1. If equipped, position the LH engine-to-transmission support bracket and install the 3 bolts.
                                                                                      • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
                                                                                      1. Install the starter wiring harness support bracket and bolt.
                                                                                        • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
                                                                                        1. Install the upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.
                                                                                          • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
                                                                                          1. Install the transmission cooler tube support bracket and the nut.
                                                                                            • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
                                                                                            1. Position the power steering pump and install the 3 bolts.
                                                                                              • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
                                                                                              1. Install the power steering pump support bracket and the nut.
                                                                                                • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

                                                                                                1. Install the transmission fluid filler tube bolt.

                                                                                                  1. Position the power steering reservoir and support bracket and install the bolt.

                                                                                                          1. Position the wiring harness retainer brackets, install the 2 nuts and attach the wiring harness retainer.
                                                                                                            • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
                                                                                                            1. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
                                                                                                              1. Connect the degas bottle coolant hose.
                                                                                                                1. Position the ground cable and install the bolt.
                                                                                                                  1. If equipped, connect the block heater electrical connector.
                                                                                                                    1. Connect the heater coolant hose.
                                                                                                                      1. Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section.
                                                                                                                      1. Install the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.

                                                                                                                      1. Connect the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor electrical connector.
                                                                                                                        1. Install a new oil filter.
                                                                                                                          • Tighten to 16 Nm (12 lb-ft).

                                                                                                                            • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
                                                                                                                            1. Install the powertrain control module (PCM) and the support bracket. For additional information, refer to Section 303-14.

                                                                                                                            1. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil.
                                                                                                                            1. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.
