I have a 2010 F150 Lariat, 5.4 V8. When it gets hot, like towing a boat, it begins to sputter as if it will stall, but only at about 900 RPM's.

The concern you are describing what what happens when the variable can timing acts up. The first step of course is to replace the oil filter and oil. Ford has proven off brand filters can cause this concern. If that doesn't help the easiest way to diagnose is see if unplugging the Vct solenoid on each engine makes a difference. If it does the Vct solenoids can be bad.
