Customer Question

My 2013 Ford Expedition would not start, just clicked, jumped off from other car, started quickly, but would not shift gears, got home and lifted ground cable off battery, continued to run, turned off and restarted easily and would shift gears, put battery on charger, charger shows battery good and 14.3 volts from alternator????

Hi. It does appear that your alternator is charging if you are at 14.3 volts. But your battery may have a dead cell in it. Which will hold a voltage charge but not enough amps to start the truck. A battery with a dead cell usually has a hard time starting after it has been sitting a while. I would recommend either replacing the battery or have an actual load test performed on it. Is that something you can have done?

what would cause it to not shift gears?

It could have been the low voltage. If the computer or the throttle body, or many other things did not get full voltage it may have been in a fail safe mode. Then disconnecting the battery again, probably reset that.
