1985 Ford 350 carburetor dual tanks electric fuel pumps ,while trying to start I can only hear pump running after many attempts at running starter.pump will run a short period then cut off.why does pump not continue and keep engine running?

Hello, the fuel pump will only prime for a few seconds when being an electrical pump in the tank unless this is a frame mounted factory rail pump. Are you getting fuel pressure at the carburetor? Fuel filter is not plugged up?
