Customer Question

Ford 1999 F150 5.4 Liter. I have a noise that sounds like a exhaust manifold leak. I replaced the plugs and coils and a few vacuum lines that were cracked. I found one loose plug. The plugs looked fine. Normal wear and tear. How can I confirm it's a manifold leak?

any signs of soot or rot on the manifolds?

I'll have to check tomorrow. Raining today. Will I have to take the tires off to see?

tire removal gives more access but I would look with them on first look for missing studs/bolts

I found two broken bolts on the passenger side exhaust manifold. I sprayed all the bolts with PB penetrating oil. I will do this daily until Saturday. I will get the new manifold and bolt kit this week and replace the manifold. Worried about bolts braking off. I've read a few horror stories.
I will look into bolt and nut extractor kit. Any suggestions?

they break a lot...if not they need to be extracted carefully

I replaced the passenger exhaust manifold and nuts/studs. Everything went OK. Just tedious. Studs and bolts came out no problem. Applied heat via propane torch for 3 minutes each, then cooled them off with water, 13mm bolt/nut extractor. YouTube trick! However, I'm still getting a rough idle and the same exhaust noise as before. Almost no change. The drivers side looks OK. I will take the tire and plastic shield off this weekend and inspect closer. The truck idles really rough, almost stalling. I'll continue looking for other issues. Any suggestions?

is the engine light on?
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
No. I wish. I'm changing the vacuum lines this weekend. Part just came in.

inspect the other manifold would also clean the mass air flow and the throttle body
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Did that 2 weeks ago. Same time I changed plugs.
