My 1999 ford explorer lift gate latch and window latch won't open. I can get a latch at a junkyard - but
A) do I need to replace it
B) how do I do that OR
C) can I repair them, instead of replacing?

Have you attempted to adjust the linkages? Check out this diagram and let me know if this is something you could do.

there are 2 things going wrong
1) there is no tension on the handle when I try to open the back lift gate - cable broken?
And
2) I can -with great difficulty - open the back window (on the back lift gate- but it's impossible to now close it.
