If this is a F250 with ESOF, have the mechanic check the relays to make sure there are no issues with the relays. If the relays are good, then further checks will need to be done at the shift motor on the transfer case to see if the transfer case is getting power. If it is getting power and ground as well as a signal to shift, the the transfer case motor is bad. If your mechanic has a Ford IDS tool, he/she can check the operation of it as well as for codes in the module to indicate taht there is an issue going on with it.
