My 1989 ford truck starts and as soon as I release the key

Hello and thank you for your question,

The problem you are describing is very likely caused by a separating Ignition switch located under the cover on the top side of the steering column. Ford had a recall for this very problem back in the day. Pull the cover off and have a look at the ignition switch. The switch is part plastic and par metal and they are know to come apart. If you find it coming apart, it will need to be replaced.
