My husband was driving our 2002 Ford F-150 pick up and it

Customer Question

My husband was driving our 2002 Ford F-150 pick up and it just stopped running. It has a Triton V-* and uses gasoline for fuel. No noises, it just quit. Won't restart.

Does the engine crank over by the starter?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It cranks just doesn't fire.

Thank you. Do a these checks and please let me know the results. I need you to be my eyes since I physically cannot see your truck.

Turn the key to on and see if the yellow check engine light comes on in the instrument cluster.

Then try to start the engine and see if the check engine light goes out while cranking.

Then, on the passenger side of the engine on the intake manifold, are the metal fuel lines for the fuel injectors. There is a test port for the fuel system on these rails near the back side on the passenger side. It will look like a metal valve stem for a tire. Push the needle valve down and see if you get a large spray of fuel.

He said the check engine light doesn't always come on. He's going to check the rest of what you wrote.
Expert:  A. Penland replied 1 year ago.

No problem. Have him do the checks when he has time and reply back on this page when he is ready.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No fuel came out.
Expert:  A. Penland replied 1 year ago.

Ok. Make sure the check engine light is coming on when the key is turned on.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I guess it came on just before he checked the fuel valve.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
What does it mean that the light doesn't always come on?
Expert:  A. Penland replied 1 year ago.

You could have a bad fuel pump. Go to the fuel pump inertia switch located under the passenger side of the dahs behind the kick panel and check for power to at the switch when the key is turned on and power out on the pink wire while cranking. If power is present, the fuel pump has failed in the fuel tank.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No power there.

No power on the DARK GREEN wire while cranking the engine?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No power on the pink wire.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
You never mentioned a green wire before.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No power to the green wire.
Expert:  A. Penland replied 1 year ago.

Sorry about the wire color.

Check fuse #10 in the engine bay fuse box. Make sure it has power and is not blown. It should be a 20 amp fuse. Then, swap out the fuel pump relay in the same fuse box. Then check for power again.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
swap out do you mean replace with new?
Expert:  A. Penland replied 1 year ago.

Yes. The relays are not that expensive.

But also check fuse 18 and the PCM power relay. They supply power to the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump relay fuse.
