If you can jump the battery first that would be great so you do not replace it and it does not need to be replaced. But if you have no way to jump it, it is a good place to start.

The car worked fine. Drove it into the garage. An hour later, the electric system seemed to be completely dead. Would the battery die that rapidly?

It is possible. Especially if something in the vehicle was left on. But also, there may be a problem with the charging system that did not allow the battery to get a full charge before you parked it.
