Hello, when you turn the key to on does the red theft lamp blink quickly or does it come on steady and go out after a few seconds? Do you have more than one ignition key?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The theft lamp cones on steady then goes off. I have 2 ignition keys

Ok does the radio appear to dim when you hold the key to the crank position? Are you getting battery voltage to the two starter wires, lage battery supply cable all the time and battery voltage to the solenoid on the starter when holding the key in the crank position? Will it crank if you jump the starter at these two wires?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I have aftermarket radio. No power when switched to on position

Ok did it just not start one day and having this issue now or did it die driving or after a repair was done? You have no power going to the starter at all?

Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

Standard or automatic transmission>?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
it just didn't start. I pulled it into my shop.Cut it off. Cleaned truck out. Went to rurn it on and nothing. Took old starter out had it tested. It was shot. So I put new starter in. Then battery was dead so I jumped the dead battery off the starter spun over but never caught. So I got new battery. And starter relay.

that's where I'm at 2 days and still no running truck lol

Automatic

Ok do you have power going to the starter? If you use a pocket screwdriver and jump across the battery lead and the solenoid lead will the starter crank the engine?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I haven't tried that yet
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Lemme try hang on
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Leave ignition off?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Starter spins
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

It should crank with off, and it will run if you leave the key to on, so the question is if you are getting a signal to the starter solenoid wire(smaller wire) from the ignition when turning to the crank position and that circuit operation depends on if it is a manual or automatic transmission

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Why would it just quit all of fa sudden like that?
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

See if it will crank in park or neutral since its an automatic.

Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

Depends if it popped a fuse, overheated a circuit, has a bad ground, number of things are possible or issue with the trans range sensor not reading park or neutral when trying to start. It wont crank in any other gear range but park or neutral

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Tried neutral and park no crank
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The ignition on I have battery light and engine light on
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

Ok do you have power to the starter relay you replaced, have it put in the right spot in the fuse box?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
When I turn key it makes a clicking sound
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

The starter does, make sure you are getting battery voltage to the solenoid smaller wire, they had issues with bad wire contacts to the solenoid.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Would a test light tell me if I have power to it?
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

Yes but a digital voltmeter be better. see if it has a voltage drop. here is a schematic of the circuit, verify you have battery power to the starter relay as well

Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

Long as the theft lamp proves out you shouldnt have an issue with the ignition circuit. If it wont crank on its own its an issue with the starter circuit from the igntion switch to the trans range sensor, starter relay, or starter wiring

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No power to small wire that runs to starter. It's a brown and green wire
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

Right, that will only have power when you hold the key to the crank position.

Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

That is fed from the starter relay in the wiring diagram

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
if I turn it to on position but not crank I should have power?
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

only when you turn the key to the crank position

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ok well I have to head to bed get up early. I'll test some more stuff may get back on here when I have more time.
Expert:  HDGENE replied 1 year ago.

no problem check circuit at starter relay
