If you unplug the alternator does power come back?

No,The truck was running when I put a wire on one of the post on the alt. and stop the motor. I smelled smoke in the cab.

Your alternator is likely shorted internally. If that is the case it probably ruined the fusible links that are near the battery. I would repair the wires and install a different alternator b
