Hello, That's correct about seeing the water flow through the radiator with the cap off. Once the thermostat is open the water will begin to move and the upper radiator hose will become very warm and also have a felt resistance if you should squeeze it by hand.
Overheating of the engine and no/little heater output
Thanks for the additional information. It sounds like you have some bloackage in the system. It's very common for rust and scle to build up over the years.
What I suggest in this case would be to flush the system. I recommned the kit below as well as a good radiator flush product such as Bars leaks or Prestone brand.
There's intructions on the kit, but basically it splices into the heater hose and uses a garden hose to flush the system after a flushing chemical is used to loosen any rust/scale in the heater core and radiator.
It's also a good practice to change the thermostat after the flush.
