i just bought a 2001 mercury sable ls with 159000 miles. it ran fine until i stopped and started up a hill. where it started to accelarate on its own. i finally got to where i could put it in nuetral and stop it. when i stopped it it reved to 4000rpms and stayed there. i shut it off and tryed to start it again it did the same thing. i even dissconnected the battery for a bit and it still did it.

Welcome to JustAnswer, my name is XXXXX XXXXX I'm here to help get your problem solved. It sounds like either the throttle body is stuck open or the throttle cable. You will want to remove the intake boot from throttle body and then try to open/close the throttle plate a few times. Here is a picture of what you need to look for, let me know what you see or if you run into any questions. You can reply to this answer at any time without additional fees so make sure to let me know if you have any questions at all, thanks Brian.

do u have any more ideas on what it could be. thank you

It can pretty much only be a stuck throttle body, stuck throttle cable, or stuck gas pedal. Let me know how it goes or if you run into questions, thanks.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

it was the cruise control cable. The plastic bracket broke an caused it to hang up.

Good to hear it was something simple. Thanks for update Brian and have a good night.
