Hello... my wife and I are shopping around for a good used car and are trying to avoid scams... is there any place/website where we could possibly get a vehicle history report where we don't have to pay? Carfax and autocheck charge but we would rather leave those as a last option if there are no way to get free reports... thank you

The best thing to do, is first find a car you like, then take it to a reputable shop or dealer and ask them for a pre-purchase inspection. The fee should be around $100.00. Believe me when I tell you, you will get the money back you spend by having a detailed reciept showing current and or past problems with the car. I have done literally hundreds. But you must have a inspection by a knowlegable person who can not only check for mechanical issues, but paint. body and possible frame damage. Lets say the shop says the car needs $500.00 worth of repairs, get the seller to pay it by lowering the price $1000.00. When the seller sees whats wrong in black and white, they almost always renegotiate tyo compensate for repairs needed. Good Luck, happy car shopping!
