2001 ford explorer sport 6cyl. -check engine light on. Code was P1451se, which is evap. emission system vent control valve circuit malfunction. Took it in for a smoke test, they said it was the evap. canister soleniod. So, I replaced that, and the check engine light still comes on(after resetting it). Any suggestions?
Optional Information: Make: Ford Model: explorer sport Year: 2001 Already Tried: see above
Hello and welcome to JA...for the code P1451 to come on, the PCM tried to close the CV solenoid, but didnt notice a decrease in Fuel Tank Pressure, so it turned on the light...several things can cause this...1 being the CV solenoid, but since it has been replaced we can rule that out. The 2 most common causes are...1...a blockage in the vent hose from the solenoid to the vent, which will cause no reduction in Fuel Tank pressure when the CV solenoid is commanded off....the other would be a wiring concern, which is normally going to be visible at the connector , by a possible rodent chewing on it...so the best thing to do is have the wiring inspected for damage, and if it is ok, then whomever did the repair should have verified the CV solenoid was the right repair by running the EVAP test. I am going to suggest having the EVAP test performed, and that will tell us if the solenoid is getting a signal from the PCM or isnt, then we can go from there.
okay, i'll let u know. What exactly is involved with a evap test?
you need to take it to the dealer, there we will hook up the Ford Computer to the vehicle and it will test the EVAP system for proper operation...most outside (independent) garages dont do this, and will normally just replace whatever part they get a code for, then when that doesnt fix the problem, they go to the dealer, we fix it, but then get blamed for high prices, but just remember if you go to the dealer in the first place, then you can avoid what is happening now. The dealer will charge $149 to do the EVAP test, but at least you will be getting a thorough diagnostic froma factory trained technician, and not just someone taking a guess and costing you money.
