Customer Question

My 2006 E250 that has developed a leak. The first sign of fluid is at the boot over the connection to the axle. Where might the actual leak be and what fix is possible for me to do at the house? Any help will really be apprecited.

Country: United States
Make: Ford
Model: E250 Econoline HD

Already Tried:
The van smoked last night. I stopped to check it and found the fluid to be pretty much gone. I managed to get home by refilling it several times on the way home. Other than that, I've looked underneath but am unsure what I need to do to be sure where the leak is and how to fix it.

Hi, I’m Chris. Welcome and thanks for asking your question!

Is the transmission or rear axle leaking?

Customer replied 266 days ago.

Sorry for delay. Acting as go-between for owner. Leak appears to be at tranny rear seal, which has (?) popped out/loose.

Thanks John.

The rear seal on the transmission at the extension housing rarely leaks on its on. There is usually a cause for this leak other an just the seal. The rear driveshaft needs to be removed and the U-joints worked in hand to see if either are hard to bend or sloppy causing an out of balance vibration. Then see how tight the front of the driveshaft fits into the transmission. if it has alot of up and down movement then a new extension housing is needed because the brass bushing inside is worn and this caused the seal to fail. If all checks out fine then just remove the driveshaft and pry out the seat and install a new one.
