Customer Question

1996 Explorer ac cycles for 10 sec then compressor will not engage. If I turn off the ac then turn it back on it does the same thing. I jumped both ac clutch cycling switch and the High pressure switch and it runs for 10 seconds then stops. If I Jump the clutch manually it works great.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Justanswer, My name is XXXXX XXXXX X am here to try and assist your with your question.

The AC clutch signel come from the switch thru the Pressure switches and then to the WOT relay, the wot relay has power to it from the EEC relay on Pin 85 and pin 30 from the switch and the PCM (computer) grounds the relay on pin 86. The problem your describing sounds like the relay may be bad. Start with making sure you have battery voltage on Pin 85 and pin 30 key and AC on and if so ground pin 86 and see if the AC compressor come on, if so, replace the relay. Let me know if you need some help with this.

10.5 volts on both 85 and 30. Grounding 86 does nothing.

Thanks

Then that means the relay is bad, see if the clutch runs if you jump pin #30 to pin #87

Customer replied 281 days and 1 hours ago.

Yes it works when I jump 87 to 30. Thank you very much. I can't believe it was the relay, I replaced this a month ago from Autozone. Thank you again.

As long as your sure the PCM is grounding pin 86, there really isnt much else it can be. I think you nailed it, great work for sure and thank you as well.
