Hello and thanks for your question.

This can be caused by inoperative brake lights, a failed shift lock actuator or wiring concern. The problem will need to be diagnosed with several tests which involve checking brake lights, and then accessing the shift lock solenoid to test for power and ground. In the meantime until you can have it serviced the picture below explains how to override the shift lock so the vehicle can be driven.

thanks. the break lights were working, but the fuse, we will have to check.when we press the breaks, the shifter makes a clicking knows.

Then the lights and the fuse are good and the solenoid is more than likely mechanically sticking. Even though you hear it click it probably is not moving far enough to let the shifter disengage. Thanks for the rating and bonus! I really appreciate it!
