2003 F-350: check engine light..keeps coming back..injection

Customer Question

I have a problem with a 2003 F-350 with the 6.0 powerstroke. I have a check engine light that keeps coming back for the injection control pressure. I clear the code and it will stay out for a few days then come back. I have noticed at an idle every once in awhile there will be a change in RPM's for a few seconds, it will rev up about 300 rpm then come back down. What is causing this?

Country: United States
Make: Ford
Model: F-350
Year: 2003
Engine: 6.0L powerstroke

Dieseljunky2 : Hello, more than likely, the ICP sensor is starting to fail. When they first start to go, it will cause the injection pressure code, as it progresses, it will affect idle to the point it sounds like a cammed out race motor. This sensor is the one closest to the cab under the turbo on the drivers side. Thanks
Customer :

Is this sensor accessible without removing the turbo? I'm not looking at the truck right now?

Dieseljunky2 : The way we changed them at the dealership was from underneath. There is a heat shield bolted to the back of the engine above the trans. Take this off and then the sensor can be accessed. You will not be able to see it unless you use a mirror. Also, it is highly recommended to replace the wire connector for the sensor. There were a lot of problems with it as well. If you don't mind taking the heat shield off twice, if there is no oil leaking out the sensor where it plugs in, I would replace only the connector first. If the code comes back then replace the sensor.

Thank you!
