2003 6.0L diesel wont start intermitently.Turns over, but seems like not getting fuel. Never dies while running. By physically moving the truck (i.e. towing), truck then starts normally. Experienced gas mechanic with limited diesel experience (farm tractors)
Hi, welcome to Justanswer.com my name is XXXXX XXXXX X will be answering your question.
Start by checking the oil level and condition this is crucial in these engines because the injectors run off of high pressure oil.Pull the cap off the top fuel filter housing when it does this if the reservoir is empty it could be the fuel pump.If you are at or below 1/4 tank of fuel the pickup tubes break off the intank sender causing you to suck air below 1/4 tank this will not throw any codes. If you add 5-10 gallons when this occurs and cycle the key to bleed the air it should start fine.It could be a bad IPR (injector pressure regulator) or the ICP sensor (Injection control pressure sensor) Sometimes they read higher oil pressure with just the key on giving the computer a false indication to control the IPR. If you can monitor data an ICP should read 0 psi with the key on engine off.If you have alot of injector codes with a p0611 the FICM(fuel injection control modual) could be going bad.
I hope my assistance helped you and resolved your concern, if you need further assistance please ask.

Oil level is and has always been fine. Fuel pump was replaced six monthes ago. Had it scanned a cupouple of time, no codes. Jostling or moving the truck by towing it around with another truck or tractor, it will start imediately as it normally should. Its like somethings lose preventing it from starting. The starter itself turns anytime you use the key. This scenario has happened a dozen times over the last 8 monthes. What components will stop or prevent the fuel flow?
Is the fuel level above or below 1/4 tank when this happens?
Above 1/4 tank.
Make sure the oil level is at the proper level. You really need to monitor ICP pressure when cranking and make sure it builds to 500 psi or more very quickly. I would also verify the fuel filter bowl is fuel to eliminate a fuel concern.
