96 Ford Explorer- has an issue re-starting if cools for a few min after being at norm drive temp. Starts fine when cold or after cooling down half an hour or more, or right after cutting off when still hot just not in-between.
Country: United StatesMake: FordModel: Explorer 4x4Year: 1996Engine: 4.0 Already Tried: switched same rated relays, cleaned throttle body, replaced: ect, tps, crank pos sens, fuel press regulator. Still receiving spark when problem happens. Occasionally can eventually get her to re-start after goosing with ether. Currently no codes.
Thanks for your question. Sorry you're having car problems, I will do my best to research this and supply you with an accurate answer ASAP. This sounds like the check valve in the fuel pump is bad and not holding the pressure all the time. See if you can test the fuel pressure with a gage before and after it does this, that will confirm it. Hope this helps you. Thanks, Ron
Hi Ron,
but if it is the check valve, wouldnt it happen all the time? It starts fine when cold. Thanks.
It could be sticking, plus on cold engines, the ECT richens the mixture and allows it to start more easily. Then the pump catches up with itself and it stays running. The test is important to do prior than putting in a pump though, just to confirm it.
You can also try holding your foot to the floor when this happens, just in case you have an opposite problem like a leaky purge valve making it rich instead of lean. Thus the reasons for testing. Thanks, Ron
Ok. Holding down the throttle does not do anything. Just had it in my mind something was getting hot under the hood and stopping the fuel until it cooled down. I will try to get a tester for that. Thanks.
