Tom N. :

Hi, my name is XXX XXX I can assist you with your problem. Please remember that I only get credit for assisting you when you click on the ACCEPT button after you have all the information that you need to resolve your problem. Are you available to chat?

Customer :

yes

Tom N. :

The last time that you got fuel did you have the key in the on position while refueling ?

Customer :

no

Tom N. :

Have you noticed any ertratic gague movements?

Customer :

yes

Tom N. :

Thanks, this sounds as if you have a sending unit that is going out on you. the sending unit is the device that sends the fuel level signal indirectly to the gague.

Customer :

replacing the fuel pump will that fix the problem and would that cause the engine light to come on

Customer :

what causes sending unit to fail?

Tom N. :

Replacing what is called the fuel tank module, that includes the fuel pump and the sending unit, replace as a complete unit. Trust me on this one. Why replace one if the other is just about to go out as well. Most likley will solve your problem. Check engine light could be from low fuel pressure or a bunc of other things, do you have a scan tool. Failure of the sending unit is from the great gas that we get...

Customer :

Will I need to clean the gas tank and what is the best way to do this need the vehicle unable to have vehicle sit for days?

Customer :

Do you recommend ford brand or oem brand?

Customer :

Is this a common problem with the explorer?

Tom N. :

No, just clean the area on top the tank where the sending unit /pump goes into with a hose so that it is clean and no dirt goes into the tank. Use extreem caution on doing this yourself, this is an extreemly dangerious job, would highly recomend that you allow a shop to do it to avoid a fire hazzard situation. Yes, have seen this several times. One last thing you might try is removing the negative battery cable and allowing the vehicle to sit for a while.

Tom N. :

Did you need any more assistance?

Tom N. :

Still there?

Customer :

yes,What is the average shop cost replace fuel pump?

Tom N. :

300/400

Customer :

not including part or including part

Tom N. :

not including the part, part is about 250/ 300

Customer :

Why did you suggest letting vehicle sit?

Tom N. :

That allows the memmory in the body control module that is an integral part of the fuel sending system to clear. only allow to sit about 5 min.

Customer :

ok I understand I paid $573. for part from ford believe after talking with you I have been overcharged.

Tom N. :

Yep. dealers are alwas expensive. Call Napa and see what they want for one.

Customer :

Napa sells same as dealer do you recommend aftermarket part?

Tom N. :

Yes, have had good luck with NAPA fuel module for Explorers

Customer :

Ok great I thank you for your help

Tom N. :

Hope this helps. please click on the ACCEPT button if I have answered all your questions. Please ask if you need more assistance Bonus is always appreciated . I will post positive feed back for you, please do the same for me.

Thanks and God bless.
