99 Lincoln navigator: idles..spark plugs, coils, fuel pump..maf..egr

Customer Question

Hi i have a 99 Lincoln Navigator 5.4L 32v with 158K, it idles great as soon ss I press the trottle it chokes and back fires through the intake. I am going crazzy and broke trying to fix it! Here is a list of things done so far, spark plugs, coils, fuel pump, fuel filter, maf tested, tps tested, dpfe tested, egr tested, all vac lines checked (already replaced broken pcv hose on back of the manifold, sprayed engine to find any vacuum leaks nothing found, dissconnected exhaust form manifold to see if cats were backed up, it had the sam symtoms no change. Truck can idle perfectly but cant be put under any kind of load. I am stumped Please help.

I apologize for the delay, just seen this question.

Curious if you have tried to drive it with the EGR disconnected.

From your description, it appears to be lean on acceleration, has poor ignition(timing?) or not enough fuel pressure.
These are causes to spitting back through the intake.

Also on my mind is the timing chain on this engine......

I havent driven with the egr disconnected but I haved reved the engine while on park with it disconnected and had the same results. The problen has seemed to worsen in the last few days to the point of not being able to drive it so I am unable to check this right now. Is it common for the timing chain to be worn on the Navigators at this mileage?

Not common to me in my area. But then again, there are not too many of them around here either.
It is the symptoms that is making me think that way.

I also did not see where you mentioned fuel pressure has been tested.
I can't assume that you have, so I need to ask what the fuel pressure is.

Did this start to do this suddenly?

To be honest i have not checked the fuel pressure, becuase I changed the pump and filter and assumed it was ok, I pulled the 4 injectors off the passenger side to check the flow they seemed ok too.

Hello.

Lets get that checked.
Low pressure can cause this.
In a problem such as this, we can't sidestep anything.
It may be fine, but what if it is a bad regulator?

There is a valve on the fuel injector rail that looks like a tire valve.
That is where the pressure is tested.
30 psi minimum engine running,
40 with the key on, engine off minimum.

I will pick up a gauge today to check it, and get back with you. Just an fyi i checked compression while it was running and it 60psi in two cylinders(this was with all other plugs in) what are your thoughts on that?

Hello and thanks for your question.

60 psi engine running is actually OK. What is it engine off? These engines are known for exhaust valve seat recession.The issue is hard to identify with conventional compression testing. Usually this will cause misfire at idle but not always. The only way I know of to identify this is issue is by performing a relative compression test with a Ford IDS scanner. This is the only scanner I know of that has this capability. Without running this test you will pull your hair out trying to get to the bottom of this issue. If it stumbles bad on accell you at least need to identify if it is one or multiple cylinders. I can tell you from experience that cylinders 7 and 8 are the most common for this issue. Once the cylinder is identified then a cylinder bleed down test will usually confirm the valve seating issue.

Not sure if you saw my original comment(just want to make sure you see all the issues) Im glad you are helping me now I dont think the last guy had ever worked on a Navigator before. Please let me know if there are any other way i can trouble shoot without an IDS scanner, since it will almost be impossible to take to the dealer the way it is acting right now.

I did read the entire post, without an IDS I would probably try to isolate which cylinders are dropping off by unplugging injectors one at a time and looking for a contribution change. If you can determine which cylinders are causing no change then I would run a manual compression test on those cylinders and compare to a known good cylinder. The compression test needs to be run exactly the same for each cylinder tested; i.e same amount of compression strokes per each cylinder when testing. If you are able to isolate a cylinder(s) with lower compression then a bleed down test would be next on the affected cylinder(s). Its a lot of work without an IDS.

Ok i pick up a fuel pressure gauge last night I will be abble to test the pressure later today, I am curius wheni removed my gas tank some of the vapor lines seemed a hair loose if there was a slight leak with this cause any of the issues i am seeing?

Ok good, hey I picked up a descent scanner last night too that show the values of the maf and o2 sensors fuel trim and ect, but i dont really know what im looking for are there any standard values that you can send me so i now if I am in the ball park on my sensors? As soon as i get any headway(just trying to find time to work on it) on this I will def accept your answer, and be using you more in the future. Thanks for being patient.

Under what conditions was this one taken? With all the LONGFT at zero its telling me the PCM has been recently cleared and has not relearned fuel trim values yet. You should let in run long enough so that LONGFT start to show some values other than zero to indicate true fuel calculations.

ok i took the throttle body off cleaned and tested the egr, cleaned the iac, and puit everything back together, still ran like crap. also my fuel presure stays constant at 35. I figured i open the oil filler cap and see the suction and noticed a white film on the inside of the tube and the top of the cap but the dip stick looked ok, does this mean anything?

White film is normal from condensate if it is just on the cap and tube.

1500rpm .050 and .780 both stay steady at this rpm too.

not sure it it makes a diffrence but when i hold it at 1900rpm(about the highest it will let me go in park) it chokes after 5 seconds until i left off the trottle then it will continue to idle fine.

Ok thanks, those sensor readings are good. The cutting off when revving in park is going to be from the rev limiter.

It might be the rev limiter but if i dont let off the trottle when i hold it at 1900rpm
is backfires and misses too sometimes, sorry for no being clear.

Its kind of hard to tell if its the rev limiter or not. Usually when the limiter kicks in it kills cylinders randomly and can definitely feel like misfire and backfire. I thought it wouldn't take any gas at all when you tried to accelerate.

Thats still true I have not driven the truck becuase of the back firing and lack of power while in park, I did try to power brake it today just to see if it was any diffrent same thing it misses and doesnt ahve any power when I am hold the brake while pressing the gas.

On the nav's in park it will rev limit. In gear during brake torque it will go into trans protection which is similar to rev limit it will kill cylinders randomly to reduce/limit trans load to protect the trans and converter. I would recommend at least driving it around the block to see what it does.

I will do that today when I get of of work, i have the battery disconnected right now to and will reconnet to start from scratch, i disconnected each coil last night to try and find a bad cylinder but the all reacted them same when un plugged. I will try and drive it, but the last time I did it took me 10 min. to go 2 miles becuase I had to go so slow i never got past 15mph. Did you noticed anything from the O2 reading i sent last night?

I was thinking about the COPs I bought off of ebay that arnt Ford coils, is there a chance these are bad out of the box? Do you have the specs to test these if you think that could be an issue?

Hi here is what the scanner recorded(it takes a shot every few seconds it records thats why there are so many lines) driving around the neighborhood, I didnt want to got too far and it wouldnt let me go any faster than 15mph or so, I didnt go very far because im worried that it will cut off on me the way its acting. I guess i still didnt get a long term fuel trim out of it either. What does fuel system ol fault mean? Didnt really find any info online about it. Oh and still no codes after driving.

Ok i finally got a code p0171 bank 1 system too lean, and i drove it a bit more and when i put it in park i noticed that my rev from idle felt a hair stronger than it has been since the reset, and i got the long term fuel trim to pop up when i held it at 1900rpm (in park) or so(still wont let me got past that but better than 1500) here is some of what i recorded with the long term fuel trim please tell me your thoughts.

The readings in open loop are ignored by the PCM. Open loop means the PCM is operating in a preprogrammed strategy because it can not efficiently operate the engine with the current input data it is receiving. When you got it to slip into closed loop all I am seeing is extremely lean operation. Either a very large vacuum leak, a bad MAF or more than likely large amounts of oxygen present in the exhaust from incomplete or non existent combustion. Every misfire causes unconsumed oxygen to pass by the EGO sensors and cause them to indicate lean and the PCM is going crazy trying to control fuel trim, evident by the large positive numbers in long and short trims. (they are pretty much maxed out) thats why it is slipping into open loop so much. I don't feel we are going to get to the bottom of this without the testing I mentioned way back in my first posts which is relative compression and cylinder bleed down. With this type of problem and the known concern with exhaust valve recession, base engine needs to be ruled out. I can't remember if you said you tried a different maf or checked to see if running it with the maf unplugged made a difference or not. In my opinion based on how severe this problem is either the MAF is bad or you have multiple misfires due to the valve recession issue I mentioned before.

Sorry you feel that way. I've spent a ton of time just to have a relist. There is no magic answer, trust me I work on these all the time. Nobody can just read this question and say oh thats it just replace this! Best thing you can do is have it towed and have these tests run that I recommended days ago.

Here is a great test that I do all of the time that works incredible for this type of issue just like you are having.

Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temp and hook your scanner up to the vehicle and view the front o2 sensors. Watch both front o2 sensor voltages as you stomp on the gas pedal getting the engine to fall on its face. Dot his long enough so that the scanner updates enough so you get a good solid reading on the front o2 sensor voltages. Basically we need to see if the engine is running lean or rich. I suspect it is going to be extremely lean..like 0.00 or 0.01 volt on both front o2 sensors. If it goes rich, you might just have plugged exhaust. If it goes lean, then we verify fuel pressure (which I think you already did). If the fuel pressure is within specs and the engine is extremely lean when this happens, then we go after the mass air flow sensor. Of course, be sure that the air intake snorkel is not ripped or cracked in any way.

A good thing to check is the baro reading in the computer. This can be way out of whack and cause all sorts of issues. If you get me the reading and your location I can check to see if it is within specs.

Here is the test results.

Under safe road conditions, a wide open throttle acceleration is performed. Try to maintain WOT for at least 5 seconds. 10 to 20 seconds would be better.

What will the pre cats do?

Will indicate rich

Should the barometric pid change?

Should remain stable! Very important!

What will air flow do?

Max out. Volumetric efficiency. Engine load 100%
(Engine load Parameter on scan tool should go close to 100%)


Results

Poor acceleration, rich exhaust, and good Barometric pressure = restricted exhaust or late ignition timing.

Poor acceleration, rich exhaust, low or decreasing Barometric pressure = intake path restricted

Poor acceleration lean exhaust and good barometric pressure = fuel delivery concern.

Poor acceleration, lean exhaust and low barometric pressure = air flow measurement error. (Ford has this problem with Mass air flow sensors)

Note: Some vehicles Barometric pressure is not updated until Wide open throttle.

A few thing previously checked.

 

I thought i might have plugged cats already i disconnected the exhuast from the manifold and it stumbled just the same(only test in park) so I want to say that is was eliminated oh i also checked the vacuum from the manifold to see if they were plugged as well and it was good too.

 

I checked the voltage on the MAF it seemed ok with what one of the tests there was online and i have cleaned it also checked for rips and such too(but im open to anything so tell me your thoughts).

 

How do I check baro pressure? Also it wont let me throttle past 1900 rpm without choking so how would I get to WOT to check? And the highest load i can get while driving is to 51% (this was checked last night while driving in the neighborhood) and that was really pushing it. The Max throttle pos. was at 26% if i go any higher it shut off on me.

 

I basically left it last night with getting a pending code (finally) that bank 1 was too lean, any thoughts?

The baro reading is a pid in your scanner that you can read when hooking it up to the computer. It should be inches or psi

Dont bother checking the mass air flow sensor with a voltmeter since you cannot get the engine to rev up. It is not a good test.

Just get the engine to act up and watch the front o2 sensor readings under a load..

ok .15 on both o2 sensor 1s just before it stalls out and it drops lower as soon as it dies and the fuel pressure stay at a constant 35psi.

i tried looking for that on my scanner and didnt see it, it doesnt have another name, i have to admit it is a harborfreight scanner (98614) i couldnt find anything in the book about the baro either???

This might just be our problem.. we cannot read the barometric reading in the computer. TI could just be way off. This measurement comes from the mass air flow sensor provided the engine is breathing ok. I would check engine vacuum at idle to be sure that it is close to 20 inches. IF so, I would be looking at replacing the mass air flow sensor. It is either that or getting your hands on a scanner that can read the baro reading..

Sounds good to me!

I would check the air intake snorkel and then replace the mass air flow sensor if that checks out good.

Also, just be sure the wiring going to the mass air flow sensor checks out ok.

Where did you get the maf from?

28 to 55 psi of fuel pressure is about normal on this engine. The fuel pressure will go up a few psi with the regulator unplugged.

You may need to get a more expensive one from the dealership.

In addition, you may have to disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes and rub the battery cables together to clear the KAM in the computer.

Also, if you want to be sure this is the issue, you need to get your hands on a scanner than can read the baro reading in the computer.

Also, you can try adding some starting fluid to the intake when the engine is bogging down to see if it picks back up or comes alive. IF so, then you know you just have a fuel delivery concern.
